According to Wikipedia, dance is from the French word danser, and generally refers to movement used as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting.
Not too long ago, I watched in awe as my 1 year old niece bounced up and down to a jack-in-the-box as it played. How odd, I thought. I had assumed dance was a learned social art. But, the innate reaction my niece had to music proved that impossible. She was feeling the music all on her own.
In high school, we all jumped around because it seemed fun. But, I still missed the connection to body and mind that years later I discovered by accident...
